A Celebration of Mexican Children's Songs

A colorful medley of songs made popular by Francisco Gabilondo Soler;  lovingly known in Mexico as "Cri-Cri."  This medley consists of:  "Tema of 'Cri-Cri' (Theme song of 'Cri-Cri')," "Di Porque" ("Tell me why, Grandmother"), "Aztec chant to the Sun," and "Llueve" ("Rain").  These songs are still sung by children in Mexico today.

Performance Notes:

The key signatures are a good challenge for the middle school to high school band with sections in G major, C major, Bb major, G minor and E minor.  Rhythmic challenges include syncopation, quarter-note triplets, dotted-eight sixteenth and grace notes from letter B to E; a sixteenth-eighth pattern from letter E to I; an unusual tie of the last eighth note in the measure to the following half note at letter K; and a combination of dotted-eighth sixteenth and syncopation at letter J.  There is a nice soli for Euphonium and Marimba at letter E and a flute section soli with Bells at letter I.  There is a percussion soli at letter G.  Care should be taken to not cover the filigree section in the Flute, Clarinet 1, Alto Sax, Trumpet 1, and Xylophone parts at letter N.  Basses part is written for String Bass and Tuba.  If no String Bass, the lower partial should be played when possible by the Tubas.
